What we covered:
Classifying matter. Element, compound, mixture; homogeneous vs heterogeneous. Built the classification tree.
Rapid-fire classification. Ten examples, including the two edge cases — milk is heterogeneous (a colloid), tap water is a mixture, not pure.
Separation techniques. Solved the sand/salt/water problem. Mapped each technique to the physical property it exploits — filtration to particle size, evaporation and distillation to boiling point, plus density and magnetism. Emphasised that naming the property, not just the technique, is what earns marks.
Naming compounds. Pattern 1 (metal + non-metal, -ide ending) and Pattern 2 (roman numerals for metals with variable charge). Still working on pattern two and will move onto pattern 3.
